The introduction says this is the greatest superhero graphic novel of the 21st century, which seemed a little silly, since as I write this, not much of the 21st century has gone by. Also, the quote was from 1999.
The book was pretty good. The idea of a superhero team that actually plans to work to change the direction of the world, according to their flavour of morality, has promise. And the illustrations are quite pretty, although I sometimes have a hard time figuring out what’s going on, but that may be unfamiliarity with the characters and their powers.
One thing that irked me is that there’s a little too much Buffy Syndrome here – everyone’s a Chosen One. The Doctor and Engineer appear to be the last in a line of unique entities that are each one-of-a-kind protectors of earth. And the team has the most powerful ship imaginable as its headquarters… really given the powers displayed by the heros and the power in the ship, I’m not sure why they’re having even the smallest of difficulties with their opponents so far.
Still, it’s pretty, and their appears to be some depth there. I’ll keep an eye on the series.
