Barbra Streisand Album

Probably an acquired taste — 6 years ago

There’s no doubt Miss Streisand’s voice is fantastic with great control and she has plenty of personality when she sings. It’s just that I probably prefer more “reverence” with many of the standards she tackles. (I’ll stick with Julie London’s version of “Cry Me a River” for instance.) On numbers with novelty appeal (“Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” or “Come to the Supermarket (In Old Peking)”) her schticky delivery suits them and those play very well. She doesn’t overplay her hand on “Happy Days are Here Again” (turning in a nicely ironic reading by turning it into a slow, morose ballad) and it gives it a fresh face. Likewise, a nicely understated “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now” and women’s lib anthem “Much More”. “Soon it’s Gonna Rain” also is a keeper. So about half I loved..half I was indifferent towards. I liked enough of it that I’ll probably work my way through her catalogue…chances are there’ll be one or two I adore and probably a good anthology or two worth buying.
