NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Maybe I’m just a little sick of this book, considering I’ve had to study it again and again since 8th grade. And I understood it completely then, because there is just not that much to get. Yes, the animals represent people and ideas. Yeah, I get that Boxer is a reference to the Boxer Rebellion. Frankly, I’m sick of it. Let’s face it: Orwell is unavoidable in a high school cirriculum, and teachers have to choose between the complex, or at least more in depth 1984, or the simple, easy and clear Animal Farm. And they keep choosing Animal Farm. I have an idea- this book should be taught to kids in grade school and then never taught again. It’s simple, plain, no longer interesting, and I’m done with it.

I’ve had to read it three times so far in school, and I think 1984 would be a much better class read (and more interesting). It’s gotten to the point where if a person asks, “What are you reading in English?”, and you reply “Animal Farm”, they shrug their shoulders and sigh because it’s so common. But if you said “1984”, that’d be downright shocking.

Just because you had it forced on you at school doesn’t mean it has no merit. I think it’s chosen quite wisely as a curriculum text. Not every pupil has a flying intellect.
