Nikki Giovanni, my favourite poet, wrote a poem that dismisses the notion that “Childhood remembrances are always a drag if you’re black…” What I like about Gates’ book is that he too, disabuses the reader of that notion. He writes about his childhood (in a mill town in Piedmont, West Virginia) with nostalgia, affection and humour. A highly enjoyable memoir.
